Proverbs constitute the very essence of language and may be regarded as a product of the culture from which they stem. They not only reflect the lives, experiences, psyche and cognitive processes of the ethnicities who use them, but can also act as words of caution and shed light on a particular culture`s moral system and concept of beauty.Proverbs are compact, imaginative, philosophical and rhythmic. What`s more, since they are both firmly rooted in everyday life and deeply cultural in nature, they are a vital resource for linguistic and cultural research, providing us with copious amounts of valuable information.Although an array of past research has been conducted on proverbs by scholars from both in and out of China, research of a comparative nature on Uyghur and English proverbs still leaves a great deal to be desired.Adopting a comparative approach, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on the from, content and cultural background of Uyghur and English proverbs. The author shall achieve this through the comparison of each proverb`s structure, subject matter, rhetorical devices, and cultural content. This paper, including the introduction and conclusion, consists of a total of five sections. The introduction discusses not only the aim, scope and significance of research, but also the creative process and varying methodologies used during the course of investigation.Chapter One contrasts and analyses proverbial structure and the usage of rhetorical devices.Chapter Two focuses on proverbs of a more moral or philosophical nature, analysing their semantic content and the way in which this content is expressed.Chapter Three investigates cultural differences through the examination of proverbs from variety of angles, such as religion, geography, climate, folklore and lifestyle. The conclusion provides a summary of the problems solved in this paper and gives an insight into possible future research.
