"Wei" theory is an important theory of medieval Chinese poetics.Do traceability analysis and connotation study on "Wei" is significant to medieval Chinese poetics research.Exploring the origin,development,cultural properties and aesthetic pursuit,Analyze the different elaboration of "Wei" by various poetics.based on these,analyze that "Wei" in medieval Chinese poetic theorist is significant to medieval Chinese poetics research.Because of the linguistic features of "Wei",Chinese unique perception mode of thinking,"Unity of Nature and Man",developed practice basis,"Wei" became a philosophy concept from a diet concept.The middle ages were the so-called "era of literary consciousness" in the history of mainstream literature,and also the historical period of "Wei" used widely in poetics and other art areas.The unique development process of "Wei" theory decided it has unique cultural connotations."word and meaning" and "Ganwu " are the cultural connotations of "Wei" theory.Words can express the presence of the elephant and the meaning,but it is not the meaning.It is the meaning of words and meaning that leave the living and development space for "Wei".The tradition of Ganwu of the ancient Chinese literati makes "taste" more than body sense to be an important criterion for the "Wei" of poetry.Connotation and implication are the aesthetic pursuit of "Wei" theory.All Liuxie,Zhongrong and Sikongtu had referred "Wei",Liuxie referred "tortuous inclusion of aftertaste" and gave some advice from the perspective of emotion,image and diction.Zhongrong referred five—character is the most taste of all poems.Sikongtu referred "essence beyond flavor" "achievement beyond ryhme",it mentioned flavor criterion to a new height.Different opinions of these poetic theorist had significant influenced the later poetics different directions in flavor criterion.
