In light of Michel Foucault's theory of space, this thesis studies lesbian writer Sarah Waters' s Affinity, one of her famous lesbian novels set in the Victorian age.In the context of space and lesbian identity, this study focuses on the inter-relationship between space in the novel and lesbian identity of the two protagonists,Selina Dawes and Margaret Prior.Space is represented in three categories in the text—namely,prison,cell/chamber as well as the female body.To start with, prison is a disciplinary space that suppresses the lesbian identity of Selina and Margaret. In Foucault's analysis of prison, its nature as a disciplinary institution where surveillance permeates requires the concealment of their lesbian identity, which is not accepted by the mainstream society and orthodoxy at that time.Furthermore,in the isolated space of their chamber and cell,Selina's and Margaret's lesbian identity is highlighted and reinforced. This kind of space serves as the mental utopia and encourages them to fulfil their respective wish of a happy life.In analysing the third level of space, different items upon the female body have caused different effects on the development of their lesbian identity. The discussion in this part involves the varying effects of female dressing and punishing items, which are used to discipline the female body in the gaol, have on lesbian identity. The thesis concludes that in three different kinds of space, the lesbian identity of Selina and Margaret gains either growth or suppression due to different conditions in each kind of space.
