A Study On The Construction Of Chinese Image Of Modern Times In Chinese Repository

Around the First Opium War,among the newspapers founded by westerns,the English newspaper Chinese Repository founded in 1832 in Guangzhou by American missionary Elijah Bridgman is a master,who tried to report a comprehensive and systematic problem in China,was known as the encyclopedia of the press.It has been an important way for western government and people to understand China,it has also been an important constructor of the Chinese image during the First Opium War,with high academic research value.But most of the current study of the Chinese repository is through the explanatory study instead of the quantitative statistics.This paper chooses the articles belong to the "Chinese People" category compiled by the editor Samuel Williams as the object of the study and perform text analysis and content analysis on it to explore the overall image of Chinese in the Framework of modern western vision.This paper shall also combine with the missionary personal background,overseas missionary motives and missionaries to participate in the early days of Sino-Western diplomatic and other production elements to analysis the deepseated reasons of the Chinese image presented by the Chinese Repository.
