Research On The Narration Of Alien Love And Marriage In Strange Tales Of A Lonely Studio

By analyzing the narratology about the love and marriage of ghosts and foxes in Strange Tales of a Lonely Studio(a classic literature work with a collection of about 500 stories by Pu Songling of the Qing Dynasty),the thesis concludes the narrative types of the love and marriage of ghosts and foxes in this work and elaborates the concrete representation and characteristics of all its elements.As such,the author specifically analyzes the triangle relationship in this literature work by combining the narrative traditions and narrative forms so as to demonstrate the deep connotation of such love and marriage.With the order from general to specific and to special love and marriage of ghosts and foxes,the author exerts a specific analysis on the structure of his narrative plots through the combination of narrative theories and cases,thus provoking the author's thinking or pondering towards the narratives about love and marriage of ghosts and foxes in Strange Tales of a Lonely Studio.The first chapter generally concludes four narrative types for such love and marriage,namely,requital-for-favor type,punishment-for-devil type in terms of the result,and marriage type,romance type in terms of the process.It matters a lot to divide narrative types about love and marriage of ghosts and foxes for understanding the text of this work.The second chapter studies the time-space of narrative.In this chapter,the author discusses the time and the space respectively so as to elaborate their significance toward shaping the characters and promoting the development of the plots.Besides,this chapter shows the specific presentation and its features of time,space and characters in each narrative type,and analyzes the narrative techniques used in shaping the characters.The discussion about the time here refers to the humanist art of time,the illusory time and the realistic time;while the space here mainly includes the explanation of its types and narrative functions.The third chapter is the study about the triangle relationship narrative mode,which includes coexist triangle relationship with marriage mode and coexist triangle relationship without marriage mode.These modes helped unseal the love ideal and the humanistic pursuitof Pu Songling,which is also the mirror of his real life.Therefore,as we all say,“ Art derives from the life and at the same time above it.”The fourth chapter is the conclusion about the narrative of love and marriage of supernatural spirits from general to specific cases.We can grasp the characteristics through these specific cases from the beginning,development,climax of the story,and finally reach the height of theory,from which we can feel the clever application of narrative skills used by Pu and further get the spiritual connotation of his work.In a word,through the narrative modes applied in Strange Tales of a Lonely Studio,Pu Songling showed us the freedom and imagination of love and marriage of ghosts and foxes.Pu's contributions lied in the pursuit towards sweet love between man and woman,and also in the influence of his work towards the innovation made in successive fictions.
