The growing demand of oil and gas and frequent accidents during recent years have made transportation safety an important topic, resulting in the significance of translation study in this field. The author translated two Chinese articles about oil and gas transportation, and wrote this report.Guided by relevance theory, the author discussed how to properly translate articles in this field on the basis of its principles and optimal relevance. The preparation and translation are critical. Before translation, firstly, linguistic characteristics were analyzed from words, phrases and sentences, and the significance of translation was explained academically, socially and culturally;secondly, terms about oil and gas transportation were accumulated for translation during the background knowledge research.During translation, two principles and optimal relevance were studied first, and some translation examples were selected to illustrate the theory in detail. Then, the connection between domestication and relevance theory was explored. The “ostensive-inferential model” of relevance theory plays an important part in the translation of source texts.Meanwhile, the author hopes this report will offer the experience on the translation of oil and gas transportation.
