Unga is the only female character in a novel of An Odyssey of the North written by Jack London. She is a fixed existence of "1' autre " in Naass' growth,in the view of the theory of subject formation by Lacan from a baby to an " adult ".Unga's nature of "1' autre " can be analyzed from Naass' three growth periods. They are:demand and the real;request, the imaginary and the mirror stage;desire, language and the symbolic. They reply to the three periods of the text in turn. They are the unity of Unga and Naass, which is the process of their meeting acquaintance and falling in love, the consciousness of Nasss towards Unga's nature of " L' autre ",which is the process of Gunderson' s occurrence and his ravishing to Unga, and the chasing of Naass towards Unga with the nature of " L' autre ",which is the process of Naass' chasing for Unga with too much hardship. The relationships between Unga and Naass are like the three relationships in subject formation theory, and they are the relationships for the unity of " infant " and " mother ",the cousciousness of " infant "towards that " mother " is a " 1' autre ",and the completely separated subject of " infant "from his " mother ".Finally, the work's ending still responds to Lacan's theory of the last period. He expressed the confusion and the loss on the way for a completed " ego" who chases the "1' autre " vividly. Therefore, the ending reveals the author's desires for returning home, motherland and " nature ",as well as the reunion of his ego and the "1' autre ".However, the " ego " embeds in culture only can " have a sigh " in the desires that never die.Heidegger points out that the art is the spiritual home for this kind of loss in his literary thoughts. In his thought, people and works are a unity or a combination,so the symbolic world controlled by the " L' autre " is deconstructed. Therefore, people can enjoy the satisfactory and happiness fully in arts.
