The third edition of Materials and Methods in ELT: A Teachers' Guide introduces the new trends of English Teaching and Teaching Methods in an all-around way.Combined with applied linguistics, the book is a good mentor of English teachers.Through translation, some advanced English teaching concepts and teaching methods can be introduced to English teachers and students in Normal University in China. And the author here hopes that they can put them into teaching practice creatively, which will promote the reformation and development of China's English teaching. The author gradually completed the translation under the basis of Functional Equivalence Theory. In this practice report, the author analyzed the translation skills in some examples during the translation process from lexical level and sentence level respectively, and analyzed some grammatical cohesive devices in original text and made corresponding adjustment in the targeted language, achieving the functional equivalence of the original and translated texts. This report contains six parts. The first part is the origin of translation. The second part sketches the author and the content as well as language features and translation difficulties of the selected text. The third part briefly introduces the translation process. The fourth part gives a brief introduction of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,it also describes the translation standards and principles under the guidance of the theory and how can we put the theory into practice. The fifth part is case analysis in translation practice.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory, the fifth part analyzes the translation skills in examples that have been applied during the translation process from lexical, sentence levels, such as word-adding skill, repetition, technique of omission and conversion at lexical level,as well as division,order-changing and voice-changing skills at sentence level. It also analyzes some grammatical cohesive devices(reference, substitution, omission and conjunction)in the original text and makes corresponding adjustment in the targeted language, achieving the functional equivalence of the both texts. The last part concludes the experience and lessons as well as illumination during the translation process. It is hoped that this translation report can afford some kind of suggestions for translation practice of this kind of texts.
