The translator was consigned by a teacher of College of Education to translate the book-Teaching Students to Drive Their Brains: Metacognitive Strategies,Activities and Lesson Ideas.The book,mainly about teaching metacognition to unlock amazing power of students' brains,is useful to enrich teachers' teaching ideas and methods.The translation report studies the application of Peter Newmark's text typology and communicative translation strategy on the English-Chinese translation of the book.According to the features of the source text and Peter Newmark's text typology,the source text belongs to informative texts.One of two Peter Newmark's translation strategies mainly adopted is communicative translation strategy.The report presents the application of communicative translation strategy from three aspects: accuracy at lexical level,smoothness at syntactical level,coherence of discourse.Detailedly analyzed are accuracy of proper nouns and terms and polysemous words,adjustment of sentence structure and addition of semantic implicit information as well as coherence of discourse.As for proper nouns and terms,the translator firstly checked whether they have established translation equivalents.If not,the translator weighed each option against relative frequency and currency of it within target language varieties.For polysemous words,final translations of them were determined in accordance with specific context.At the syntactical level,various translation methods were used to adjust sentence structure and some implicit information was added to make the target text smooth.At the discourse level,some cohesive devices were adopted to make discourse coherent.The translation task can introduce new teaching methods and ideas to Chinese education.Moreover,the translation report supplements the translation studies on application of communicative translation in informative texts.
