On Translation And "Rewriting":Report On "Dafeng Porcelain Carving"

With the continuous improvement of China's international status and economic advance,many international friends began to take great interest in Chinese culture.Meanwhile,as one of the representative forms of Chinese traditional culture,porcelain carving art has also attracted more attention from international friends.Therefore,the translator chose “Dafeng Porcelain Carving” as the translated material for the report,with the purpose of further promoting Dafeng porcelain carving and giving more publicity to Chinese culture among the world.The selected material,“Dafeng Porcelain Carving”,gives a detailed introduction to porcelain carving and its main inheritor involving a large amount of cultural,historical and political vocabularies.Therefore the translator adopted Lefevere's“rewriting” theory as the macro guidance and domestication as the translation strategy to explore the problems in ideology and poetics covering the rewriting of historical times and names as well as lexis,syntax and text respectively.Differences in culture and language between China and English-speaking countries were analyzed and literal translation with annotation and free translation were employed to solve corresponding translation problems.Finally,some translation research methods and suggestions were presented for those who major in English translation.It is hoped that more people at home and abroad can have a further understanding of Dafeng porcelain carving and even traditional Chinese culture with the help of the selected material.Besides,the translator hopes that the translation report can benefit those majoring in English translation and non-professionals to help them better understand the differences between English and Chinese and factors involved,as well as help them realize the artistic charm of languages and improve their study interest.
