The translation material of this report is excerpted from the book Happiness by Design written by Paul Dolan,a renowned behavioral economist.Unlike other books on happiness, this book does not require readers to change their thinking, but to focus on things that can bring us real happiness, whereby to enhance their sense of happiness. The Chapter 5 “Deciding Happiness” and Chapter 6 “Designing Happiness” of this book are chosen as the source text of this translation report. With the help of literal and free translation,as well as the translation shifts theory put forward by John Cunnison Catford, the translator makes a detailed analysis of the translation reports, especially the various forms of flexible translation, including the flexible conversion and processing of parts of speech, units and structures in the translation process, and tries to summarize the techniques used in her translation practice. There are four chapters in the report: Chapter 1 is the task description, which involves introduction to the translation task, the author and the source text.Chapter 2is the process description, which deals with three main processes during the translation, including preparation,while-translating and proofreading.Chapter 3 is the case study, the central part of this translation report. This chapter mainly analyzes the difficulties in translation in the light of Catford's theory of translation shifts.Chapter4 is the conclusion part, which summarizes the experiences acquired in this translation practice with further considerations to improve the translation skills.
