Appraisal Analysis Of President Xijinping's Political Speech From The Perspective Of Appraisal Theory

As vital carrier of leadership address activity,leadership speeches are usually completed by secretaries according to leaders' instruction before read out.President Xi Jinping's political speeches on different occasions are now the most valuable leadership speech for us to study.Studying them from linguistic perspective is helpful for understanding how their linguistic devices can achieve better speeching effectiveness.Therefore,we will analyse President Xi's political speeches from the perspective of appraisal theory based on a small-scale corpus to try to discuss their appraisal characteristics and the discourse strategy behind them.This article mainly has four parts.The introduction part includes objective and significance of the research,development history and basic framework of appraisal theory,the study of the status quo and research methods,the definition of relevant concepts and the condition of the corpus.Chapter one counts up the appraisal resources in President Xi's political speech corpus based on the basic framework of appraisal theory from attitude,engagement and graduation three aspects.Chapter two discusses the appraisal characteristics of President Xi's political speeches,such as attitude resources are far more than engagement and graduation resources,positive and direct resources are also far more than negative and indirect resources,abundant neuter resources express indirect appraisal,cultural project methods and different modality methods and so on.Chapter three concludes the basic pattern and the discourse strategy contained in the appraisal expression of President Xi's political speeches,thus proving the effectiveness of appraisal theory analysing leadership speech and trying to discuss the practical reference it could brought to secretarial work.
