On Film Subtitle Translation Of The Grandmaster

In the age of globalization,film has been playing an increasingly significant part in cultural communication and dissemination among different countries.As a comprehensive artistic form,film has both commercial and artistic value.After the development of almost one century,the film has emerged as one of the most important mass media around the world.In recent years,more and more foreign films have been imported into China and Chinese films introduced to the foreign market,the quality of film subtitles translation has become increasingly prominent.What's more,the directors and promoters of Chinese films are harboring an eager desire to achieve a great success and win awards from the international film festivals.In this circumstance,it's essential for Chinese film makers to pay more attention to the film subtitles since the quality of the film subtitles translation can influence the performances of Chinese film in the foreign markets.However,the studies on film subtitles translation started late both at home and abroad and the studies by the scholars are insufficient with few established system as guidance.Recently,when talking about the study on the film subtitles translation,more studies are focused on skopos theory,equivalence theory and adaptation theory while register theory lacks the attention it deserves.As one important branch in Systematic Functional Linguistics(hence,SFL),register theory plays an important role in guiding the process of translation.In SFL,Halliday defined the concept of register as the configuration of field,mode and tenor.These three variables can make the translation of the film subtitles operate within a rule-based process.With the guidance of the register theory,the translator can utilize various translation strategies to deliver the most effective information from the specific social and cultural background to the target audience.Choosing register theory as the theoretical framework and the Chinese film--The Gransdmaster as a case study,this thesis tries to analyze application of three variables of register theory in subtitle translation.In order to optimize the subtitle translation quality of the film and achieve the equivalence of subtitle translation,this thesis will introduce the original subtitles first,and then evaluate those favorable subtitles as well as amend those unfaithful original subtitle translations of the film with the guidance of register theory.In Chapter one,this thesis demonstrates the research background,research significance,research methodology and the research organization.Then the author gives an introduction to the historical study and achievements of the subtitles both in China and abroad in chapter Two.In the third chapter,Halliday's register theory and its three variables(field,mode and tenor)will be introduced.Chapter Four will be a case study of the film The Grandmaster,which is the most important part of the whole thesis,focusing on the application of the register theory in the subtitle translation.At last,the author gives a conclusion for the whole thesis.
