Along with the trend of internationalization, cultural exchanges amongdifferent countries are more and more frequent. As a sort of popular andcommon mass media, film plays a quite important role in spreading culturesand pushing forward cross-culture communication. Films are connected withlocal cultures, which reflect social ideologies, personal values or beliefs andcustoms. Through watching foreign films, the audience can have a deepperception and learn more about foreign cultures. However, because ofdifferences between languages, most audiences can just understand andappreciate the foreign films completely by subtitles. Consequently, a newtranslation field-subtitle translation appeared. As a new flourished area, thestudy of film subtitle translation becomes more and more significant andbegins to attract much attention in translation studies. In this paper, the author tries to analyze English subtitle translation ofChinese film Hero in the light of Peter Newmark’s communicative translationtheory. Newmark claims that the successful translation is to transmitcommunicative effect of source language; and it should be targetlanguage-oriented and target reader-oriented, making them receive the effectas close as that produced on the readers of the original. Communicativetranslation focuses essentially upon the comprehension and response of the receptors. Linguistic and cultural differences should be considered in subtitletranslation to accomplish such communicative effect. The thesis summarizesthree subtitle translation principles based on Newmark’s view, they arecomprehensibility, economy and equivalent effect. Hero is used as a casestudy for analyzing various subtitle translation strategies and discussing howthese strategies reflect the proposed three subtitle translation principles.Furthermore, the thesis intends to enforce the applicability of communicativetranslation theory and provide guidance for film subtitle translation practice.
