The accelerated intercultural legal communication and exchanges between China and other countries call for more legal translations. The translation of criminal judgment plays an important role in the legal translation and the accuracy of the translation reflects judicial fairness and legal norms. The author of this report selects the Criminal Judgment of [2014] Yue Gao Fa Xing Er Zhong Zi No. 74 as the source text. Through translating this text, the author tries to understand the language characteristics of Chinese criminal judgment and share some opinions about translation techniques of legal terms and Serial Verb Constructions in Chinese Criminal Judgment from the perspective of Chinese-to-English translation. There are four parts in this report. The first part is an overview of the translation practice which includes the background and significance of this report, the introduction of the source text and the objective of this translation practice. The second part is an overview of the translation process, which includes the detail information of the time schedule of translation, CAT tools, parallel texts, proofreading teams and quality control methods. The third part is the case analysis, in which several examples will be given for explaining the translation techniques used in solving problems. The fourth part is the conclusion and implication of this translation practice. This report aims to explore and discover the C-E translation techniques of legal terms and serial verb constructions in criminal judgments. The author adopts the analysis system of Mona Baker to translate legal terms and Serial Verb Constructions from three perspectives of equivalence at word level, equivalence at grammatical level and equivalence at textual level. In order to achieve equivalence at word level, translation techniques of transliteration with footnote, functional equivalents and descriptive paraphrase are adopted. Also, in order to achieve the equivalence of SerialVerb Constructions at grammatical and textual level, the author is inclined to draw support from six major translation techniques i.e. replacing one of the serial verbs with non-finite verb, nominalization, adjusting partial serial verb into clause, alternating one verb in SVC into other word class, arranging the serial verbs with conjunction and ellipsis.Despite the relative small scale of examples in the criminal judgment, the present report piles up effort in describing SVCs and their English translation techniques. It also sheds lights on the practical legal translation, improvement of translation efficiency and maturation of machine translation.Through this project, the author hopes to reach the following goals: in the first place, to improve the translation techniques, and learn more about legal text features;in the second place, the author hopes to provide constructive suggestions for the following legal translators. Nowadays as the judicial justice is becoming more and more important, the form and the content of the Criminal Judgment both cause people's concern. Therefore, the accurate translation of Chinese Criminal Judgment may be an information reference for promoting judicial justice in China.
