“College English Curriculum Requirements” issued by the Ministry of Education in 2007,put forward new college English teaching goals,clearly stating that the teaching objectives mainly focus on the emphasis of college English teaching and the direction of students' learning,in which the general cultural awareness is raised to a high standard,requiring students to learn Chinese and foreign outstanding culture.In this way,students can improve their comprehensive quality,mainly reflected in the students' inter-cultural awareness,including cultural knowledge,cultural understanding,intercultural awareness and communication skills.In 21 st century,with the guidance of the “One Belt,One Road” strategy,China has further developed in economy and society with more contacting the world frequently.In such international situation,people have more access to foreign culture;therefore,the importance of culture teaching in foreign language teaching has been gradually revealed.Language and culture are closely linked with each other,while,college English learning is actually a learning culture,and in order to learn English,one must understand its culture,in particular,familiar with the differences between the culture of his mother tongue and English.Thus,in addition to training learners' English skills,such as speaking,reading,writing,translation and other basic skills,college English teaching should pay attention to the culture teaching which can enable students to understand the cultural background of the target language and develop their intercultural awareness.Cultivation of students' intercultural awareness help students better grasp the language,so that they can realize that English learning is also culture learning.Only in this way can they truly master English.However,as China is a country with 5000 years' traditional culture,the world outlook and values have been rooted deeply.Even if the advanced theory of foreign culture teaching has been spreading in the country,how to teach culture in such a country,which is poor in English preloading cultural environment,is becoming a hot debate topic to the researcher.Meanwhile,Hainan province where the researcher is living now is located in a critical part of the new development strategy,which means students learning in colleges there are supposed to learn English with higher requirements.Therefore,the researcher chose “cultivation of cultural awareness in college English teaching” as the her subject,through the method of attempting to analyze the connotation of various dimensions in inter-cultural competence with focusing on the relationship between knowledge and awareness to find ways to improve the inter-cultural awareness of college students.So,the researcher came up with two questions to study: the first one is “What is the current situation of inter-cultural awareness(including the understanding and recognition of eastern and western cultures)?” And the other is “How should the college students' inter-cultural awareness be cultivated in the teaching process?”This study is on how to guide students to learn cultural knowledge in the classroom teaching,strengthening their intercultural awareness for the preparation of their graduation out of their colleges,to the modern international community.On this foundation,the researcher made a series of questionnaires and interviews,with a view to find out more effective methods and measures with the actual study,mainly in the links to exploring effective teaching methods.The training of students' inter-cultural awareness is focused on,with the purpose of finding out how to adjust and improve the inter-cultural awareness of students through the researcher's constant adjustment of teaching methods under the present situation.In this study,the object cultural situation of English teaching is mentioned through questionnaires and interviews among the students,with the conversations with some college English teachers as well,then the researcher found the main problems in the university English Teaching,for which the researcher put forward opinions and suggestions on training students' cultural awareness,and then in the teaching process,according to the reflected problems,the researcher constantly adjusted her teaching methods and means,from the perspective of a student-centered,and strived to find out there efficient and effective teaching methods to achieve the desired teaching purposes.After a semester's teaching,the researcher found that Chinese college students have a certain interest in learning English and its culture;under the guidance of the teacher,more students like to study and learn the cultural background of their learning content and they greatly look forward to transforming their native culture into English version.In this way,students slowly have a certain cultural foundation,and have a better understanding and grasp Chinese and Western cultures.But the researcher also found that there are still some students have resentment towards English;they do not like to learn English textbook content,not to mention the extra-curricular cultural contents.The reason is mainly in cognitive problems,and the researcher needs to refine the study and test the links of this study in the future.
