Core competence has become a heated topic in contemporary education in China,and English education has followed this trend tightly.With the publication of English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 edition),connotation of English subject cultural competence has been improved on original basis,especially cultural awareness.The development of the core competence of English subject needs practice and observation in English classroom education,and so does the cultural awareness,which is an important part of English core competence.Cultural education is the core of English education.Therefore,English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 edition)defines English curriculum for senior high schools as basic cultural curriculum.Nowadays quite a number of teachers have begun to pay attention to cultural awareness,but most of them just try to know it without deeper study and practice.This leads to the fact that teachers’ practice in the implementation of cultural awareness still falls far from the standard and the quality of cultivation of students’ cultural awareness is also worrying.In order to change the situation a little,this study conducts a survey and research in an affiliated experimental high school in H city by employing questionnaire survey,interview and classroom observation.To explore the specific reasons for students’ difficulties in cultural awareness learning,this study proposes two research questions:(1)Are there any problems in the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness in senior high school English teaching?(2)How to solve the problem that students are lacking in cultural awareness?The research will analyze the problems from four concrete manifestations of cultural awareness: comparison and analysis of cultural awareness,absorption and adjustment of cultural awareness,internalization and cognition of cultural awareness,and performance and behavior of cultural awareness.The findings of the research are as follows.In high school English teaching about cultural awareness,the distribution of comparison and analysis methods of cultural awareness is uneven.It is also difficult to choose the methods in absorption and adjustment of cultural awareness.Besides,in internalization and cognition of cultural awareness,the cultivation of cultural confidence occupies a relatively small proportion.Finally,it is difficult to raise the spiritual level in performance and behavior of cultural awareness.In the end,based on the research findings,this thesis proposes corresponding solutions: comparison and analysis methods of cultural awareness should be even in distribution;in absorption and adjustment of cultural awareness,the methods should be reasonably selected;in internalization and cognition of cultural awareness,the cultivation of cultural confidence should be enhanced;spiritual level should be raised to the level of pursuing truth,goodness and beauty in performance and behavior of cultural awareness.
