William Howard Schuman(August 4,1910 – February 15,1992)was one of the greatest American composer,musician,music educator and arts administrator in Twentieth-Century.He left a substantial body of works which include choral/vocal,concertante,instrumental,orchestral,chamber music.His works contain not only the serious music,but also the pop music.The researches about William Schuman's life and works is rare in China and the article about his only violin concerto was not found for now in China.This paper is trying to introduce William Schuman' works into China and let the public can be familiar with his works.This paper is mainly about the music analysis of the first movement of Violin Concerto.The composition of Violin Concerto last almost 10 years and there are lots of differences between two movements.Therefore,I focus on the first movement and hope understand the music composition technique used in this work.In this paper,there are four parts:The Introduction: This part is about the meaning,methods of my research.William Schuman's music works: In this chapter,I introduce William Schuman's life and works.Music analysis of first movement: In this chapter,I focus on analyzing the harmonic,construction and other music elements in the first movement,and briefly conclude the characteristic of these elements in the first movement.Conclusion: In this part,I make a conclusion about the traits of Violin Concerto first movement.
