With the development of modern science and technology,new changes happened in the educational world.Educators and teachers are paying more and more attention to the teaching of English reading.English reading teaching plays an important role in the teaching of vocational college English.Therefore,the purpose of this paper is to analyze the current teaching level of English reading and students' English reading learning ability on the basis of researches of cognitive load theory.Cognitive load theory which is combined with English reading teaching practice is used to put forward new teaching methods of English reading for teachers.The aim of vocational college English reading teaching is to train application-oriented talents,practice-oriented talents and occupational talents.They are the real English language users in their future work.Nowadays,with the increasing frequency of exchanges between the countries,there are more and more opportunities for many vocational college students to work for foreign companies after they graduate.Therefore,their English reading ability needs to be improved comprehensively.Students need to make enough efforts and they need teachers' help to improve their ability.This paper deals with how to use this theory to decrease cognitive load when students read and improve their reading level and reading efficiency on the basis of cognitive load theory.The author took two classes in grade One from Qingdao Huanghai College as the research subjects and uses questionnaires to find out the problems and difficulties of students' English reading in the vocational colleges.The author provides new theoretical evidence and teaching methods for solving the existing problems in college English teaching and build up a complete English classroom teaching model for teachers and students.This research aims to combine cognitive load theory with teaching of English reading in the vocational colleges.Extraneous cognitive load should be decreased.Intrinsic cognitive load should be controlled and germane cognitive load should be expanded.Only in this way can we help improve students' English reading ability and help teachers overcome disadvantages of traditional English teaching methods.All in all,this thesis could expectantly provide some enlightenments for English reading teaching in the vocational colleges.
