Hilda Doolittle, known for H.D.,was a distinguished imagist poet, who was also one of the American famous female writers of 20 thcentury. With the great interest in Greek Mythology of H.D.and the deep influence of the violent “The Wind of Greek Mythology”in European and American literature between the ends of 19 thcentury and the early of the20 thcentury, the mythological and archetypal images appeared frequently in H.D.'s works and they were of highly importance, for which they added a unique classical charm and mythical color to her poems. This thesis attempts to expound the images and their implications in the poem from the perspective of mythological and archetypal theory, and to reveal the charm and mystery of poetess' intensity of feelings, her attitude to life, and her poetic characteristics. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is about the research actualities and expectations of H.D.and the mythological and archetypal criticism. The second chapter offers the theoretical framework of the whole thesis,in which the author will expound the mythological and archetypal theory and imagism, then she give her own analysis and conclusion of the two theories. The third and the fourth chapters are the main part of the thesis, which gives an intensive analysis of the mythological and archetypal images that appeared in H.D.'s poems. In the third chapter, the author mainly analyzes three mythological images, which includes “Helen”,“Eurydice” and “Circe”.While the fourth chapter gives a further explanation about the natural images, which contains “sea”,” tree”and “rose”.
