Intertextual Approach To Translating Anthroponomastic Allusions In Taipei People

The allusion,as a bilaterally-directed,evocative signal,is a literary device to showcase the feature of intertextuality.To render allusions from source text to target text,the translator adopts an intertextual approach to weave the texture of these texts as well as the languages and cultures behind them.A typical work full of allusions in Chinese modern and contemporary literature is Taipei People written by Bai Xianyong.Its full text is translated by a team consisting of the author,the translator,Patia E.M.Yasin and the editor,George Gao.Among various allusions in this book,anthroponomastic allusions,namely,allusions of characters' names,draw special attention to the team and other scholars.This thesis focuses on the anthroponomastic allusion translation in Taipei People based on Udo J.Hebel's theory of allusion and Minna Rukonen's allusion translation strategy.After briefing the research background,objective,data and methodology,the thesis reviews previous studies on the translation of Taipei People,finding out the misreading of the translation due to a lack of first-hand materials concerning the translating process.Besides,summarizing previous researches on the translation of allusion and its relationship with intertextuality from literary and linguistic perspectives,the theoretical framework of this thesis is formed.On the basis of Hebel's descriptive categories of allusion and Rukonen's retentive and modifying strategies of allusion translation,intratextual,extratextual,paratextual and metatextual allusions in the original,the translating process and the translation are integrated to create a dynamic intertextual space.Through analyzing 21 representative names in Taipei People,it is found that transliteration,paraphrase and footnote are the three basic strategies to connect or disconnect the anthroponomastic allusions before,during and after translating.Intratextual,extratextual,paratextual and metatextual allusions entail literary,cultural and practical elements which are combined to translate characters' names.Finally,the thesis discusses the possible extension of Hebel's and Rukonen's theories based on textual analysis and proposes an operable,cultural intertextual space for further allusion translation research.
