In this paper,two vocabulary size tests for reading and listening are administered to 36 foreign students of primary stage,who are students in the study of central asia,Xi’an Foreign Studies University to test the students’ listening vocabulary and reading vocabulary.A listening test is administered to students in class 2 to investigate the relationship between vocabulary and listening comprehensive ability at the end of the semester.The main results are as follows:(1)One’s listening vocabulary does not equal to his reading vocabulary.Often,listening vocabulary is less than reading vocabulary.(2)There is a striking difference between elementary-level foreign students’ listening vocabulary and reading vocabulary.But for students belonging to Chinese character circle,their listening and reading vocabulary do not show significant differences from that of non-Chinese foreign students.(3)Listening vocabulary and reading vocabulary have effect on improving listening achievements,but listening vocabulary’s effect is more considerable.Based on the above results,this paper puts forward the importance of vocabulary teaching,and proposes reasonable teaching suggestions for elementary-level foreign students.
