The explicitation hypothesis has attracted constant attention in contemporary translation studies. The core of the explicitation hypothesis is to admit that it is a general phenomenon that translated texts are explicated during the translating process. This means that information which can only be derived from the context in the Source Text is explicated by translators to accord the translation with the target language and target culture, making the products more acceptable to target readers. Some theorists agree that compared to the Source Text, the Target Text contains more explanatory words and discourse markers, more repetition in the sentence structure and more explicated markers. The present thesis puts forward the hypothesis that the more effort-consuming the translation communication is,the more discourse markers will be used. Therefore, the present thesis needs to find out that 1)do the discourse markers in translated movie script observe the explicitation hypothesis;2)is there any difference in the degree of explicitness of discourse markers between translated movie scripts and non-translational texts and translational texts in the same language;3)is there any explanation for the difference in the explicitation? The discourse markers chosen for investigation in the present thesis are from Fraser's(2005)categorization are divided into four groups: contrastive, elaborative, inferential and temporal discourse makers. The standardized frequency of the discourse markers of Movie Subtitles English-Chinese Parallel Corpus(MSECPS),Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin Chinese version 2(LCMC)and Zhejiang University Corpus of Translational Chinese(ZCTC)are compared with each other. The results show the discourse markers are more explicit in the translational movie subtitles(LL=15,362.96>3.85,p<0.001)1.And translated movie subtitles also uses more discourse markers than in non-translated texts(LL=419.42>3.85,P<0.001)and translated texts in general(LL=11.59>3.85,p<0.001).The thesis reveals that discourse markers in movie subtitle translation are more explicitly used than those in the other translations in the same language, and suggests that the motivations of explicitation of the discourse markers are to constrain the interpretation of the audience, preventing them from misunderstanding in order to obtain optimal relevance with least effort, and to deliver the audience with more information on the metapragmatic awareness of the speaker to stress, highlight or confirm the propositional meaning, increase the evidentiality of the information as well as shift the topic to better the understanding of the scripts. In addition, the result of the present thesis can also be a reference for the translators of the movie subtitles, offering them some advice on how to deal with discourse markers in their translation,so as to produce a quality translation.
