Discourse markers play an important role in constructing discourse and reflecting the metapragmatic awareness of speakers or writers.As an important means of communication,English writing requires the writer to construct a coherent text with appropriate discourse markers,so as to express its metapragmatic awareness.Discourse markers play a special role in verbal and written communication.They are ubiquitous in various kinds of languages.A discourse marker is one of the important means that can be adopted by language users,so as to achieve successful writing expressions and communication.Discourse markers are words or structures that play a pragmatic role in a discourse.They do not convey propositional meanings,and do not constitute the semantic contents of discourses,but serve as information markers.Guided by the theory of metapragmatic awareness,this study investigates the discourse markers in English writing by English learners.This paper explores the differences in the use of the discourse markers and types of the discourse markers in the English learners' writing and errors made by them,and further analyzes the problems and their causes in the use of discourse markers.The results of the research show that the above problems may be caused by negative transfer of mother tongue,improper teaching materials and methods,and English learners' lack of language input.In view of the above problems,the author puts forward some suggestions for English writing teaching: enriching teaching materials,cultivating English learners' English thinking habits;increasing language knowledge input,raising their awareness of using discourse markers;and consolidating English learners' discourse markers knowledge through discourse marker exercises.Although the findings and suggestions of this study are helpful to the teaching of English writing,there are limitations and shortcomings in this study due to some subjective and objective reasons.Therefore,this research needs to be advanced and improved.
