Research On English-Chinese Translation Skills With English Fictive Motion Construction

As it is known,there are marked differences between factual motion and fictive motion.Fictive motion refers to a spatial motion event with an entity or a concept organized in a metonymic way,and it is embodied by a motion verb for a static event or situation.It is held that fictive motion is one of the most significant linguistic phenomenon linguists have found.The present thesis investigates the features with fictive motion constructions and English-Chinese translation skills of English fictive motion constructions.First of all,this thesis addresses two issues: one is the differences between factual motion and fictive motion in terms of semantic properties;the other is the differences between English fictive motion and Chinese fictive motion from the perspective of Construction Grammar.What follows in is an attempt to probe into English-Chinese translation skills with English fictive motion constructions.Following the research we have done: on the one hand,four specific semantic properties are prerequisites for fictive motion expressions;on the other hand,when a mental scanning(either summary scanning or sequential scanning)occurs in a given physically non-movable entity,there lurks a mental access to a fictive motion.Besides,it is argued that an expression with fictive motion is truly a gestalt,namely a construction which implies a kind of use-based pragmatic meaning.The related literatures indicate that translation skills mainly concentrate on lexical analysis and syntax analysis such as addition,deletion,change of word order and adjustment of sentence structures.Based on Construction Grammar(Goldberg,1995),the present theis compares four semantic properties(Figure,Ground,Path and Manner)for a detail analysis of English-Chinese translation skills with English fictive motion constructions.It is concluded by claiming that the study of fictive motion from the perspective of Construction Grammar will be much help to the related studies concerning fictive motion.It is hoped that this research will be beneficial to Cognitive Linguistics,contrastive linguistics,translation studies and the like.
