Fictive motion refers to a certain organization way in the use of language to equip a static entity with the features of motion, and it is pervasive in all languages, including both Chinese and English.Figure, motion, path and ground are indispensably incorporated in the construction of fictive motion, and subjectivity finds its way one way or another in all constructions of fictive motion.Based on the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, the present paper makes an attempt to probe into the mechanism of constructing fictive motion in Chinese and its Chinese-English(hereinafter refers as C-E)translation skills.First of all,the present research is characterized by a combination of macro and micro analysis. From the macro perspective, the fictive motion construction is identified as a language phenomenon pervasive in Chinese. And then the micro analysis focuses on the different components with a Chinese fictive motion construction from the perspective of syntactic and semantic properties.Next, the thesis resorts to both qualitative and quantitative research studies. On the one hand, based on the review of related literature,we find that as a construction grammar, fictive motion has its special syntactic and semantic properties and the related studies before didn't concern it as a construction grammar and they paid less attention to the research on C-E Translation of Chinese fictive motion. On the other hand,we have made good use of examples from C-E translation of fictive motion from Chinese classical literature,Chinese-English dictionary,CCL for a detailed analysis from the perspective of construction grammar and cognitive linguistics. Finally, with an analysis of both semantic and the syntactic properties of figure, motion, path and ground. We find that there are some differences between Chinese and English in fictive motion, especially in the expression of Time and Distance. To explain this special phenomenon between the two languages,we proposes some skills or strategies for C-E translation for Chinese fictive motion. To conclude, the present study provide an implication of an overall study aboutfictive motion in Chinese from the perspective of its cognitive mechanism. It is concluded by claiming that our research will be of some help to Cognitive Linguistics, the corpus improvement and the foreign language teaching, and the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.
