Translation Report On How To Succeed In Chinese Style Management (Excerpts)

This is a report on the translation of the Preface and Chapter Three of How to Succeed in Chinese Style Management.The aim of this translation report is to analyze how to translate the culture-specific items appearing in the text of How to Succeed in Chinese Style Management under the guidance of thick translation theory.This report is composed of four chapters.Chapter one introduces the translation task by introducing the author and How to Succeed in Chinese Style Management,introducing the relationship among language,culture,and translation,and analyzing the source text.Chapter two describes the translation process.Chapter three,the most important part of this report,is composed of three sections.Section one lists the difficulties encountered by the translator in translating the text of How to Succeed in Chinese Style Management.Section two introduces the views of scholars on culture-specific items and thick translation.Culture-specific items refer to the words in original culture that convey a concept completely strange in the target language culture.These words relate to a type of food,a kind of social custom,or religious belief.Section three analyzes how to translate the culture-specific items appearing in How to Succeed in Chinese Style Management from the perspectives of literal translation,literal translation plus annotations,paraphrase,paraphrase plus annotations.Chapter four concludes that thick translation is to convey the cultural information to the readers of TT with various translation methods,that the translation of culture-specific items helps the readers of TT to be informed of the cultural background of the text and to have a better understanding of the text,and that adding annotations should be principled by the needs of the readers.
