This is a report on the translation of a business document, whose source text is a labor contract of a certain company used in 2015.With the development of globalization,an increasing number of Chinese companies try to hire foreign experts to serve for themselves.Labor contracts refer to those legally-binding agreements between employees and employers that illustrate rights and obligations of involved parties. Therefore, the translation of labor contracts from Chinese version to English version is beneficial to reducing or avoiding associated labor disputes between employees and employers for such Chinese companies. This report elaborates on how to translate a contract, basing its case analyses on texttypology proposed by German scholar Katharina Reiss, among which the translator will discuss different translation methods and strategies towards different types of source texts. This report falls into four parts. The first part briefly introduces the background of this translation projects as well as the source text. The second part is the description of the translation completion process, which contains the duration of the translation, preparations prior to the translating step, the process of the translation and the modification process. In the third part,a brief introduction of relative translation theory, namely the text-typology is stated first.Besides, this part constitutes case analyses in lexical level and syntactic level. The last part contains a summary about the difficulties and defects in the translation as well as some suggestions for future practices.
