Style, especially literary style, has been a sensitive and complicated issue within literary and translation research field.Discussions and arguments around this issue mainly focus on what literary style is,how it is reflected in a certain text, whether it is translatable or not,and if it is translatable, how to translate questions alike. For a long time, there is no available theory which can support the study of style and its translation and also no accessible analysis mode which researchers could follow. It can be said that Liu Miqing breaks the ice in the study of style and its translation. He provides a systematic and integral mode for style study and also draws up specific style translation methods. His “Stylistic Markers System” has brought fresh air to the research field. This system can not only be used to guide literary style translation practices but also be used as theoretical support on which analysis or evaluation of a certain translation in the angle of style reproduction can be based.Hulanhe Zhuan, representative work of Xiao Hong,is known for its unique language style, particular way of narration and overall structure design, which makes it a work of special value in the field of literature. Therefore, this thesis chooses Hulanhe Zhuan and its English translation Tales of Hulan River by Howard Goldblatt as study materials and manages to answer the question that “Has Goldblatt reproduced the style of Hulanhe Zhuan in Tales of Hulan River?” Discussions and analysis of Hulanhe Zhuan's style and its translation are helpful for recognizing the style and its literary value of this work and objectively evaluating Tales of Hulan River in terms of style reproduction as well.Research methods this thesis employs are case study method and contrastive analysis method.Under the support of Liu Miqing's “Stylistic Markers System”,this thesis first gives a general introduction to the style of Hulanhe Zhuan, and then makes a contrastive textual analysis between the original work and its translation on two levels: formal stylistic markers and non-formal stylistic markers.A basic research finding is achieved that in general Goldblatt has well reproduced the style of Hulanhe Zhuan in Tales of Hulan River.Liu Miqing's “Stylistic Markers System” is a landmark in the study of literary style and its translation. It offers an integral and systematic research mode to literary style recognizing and translating and meanwhile makes a great contribution to the translation and spread of literary works.
