The Study Of Polysemic Words With Figurative Meaning In The “Modern Chinese Dictionary”

This thesis targets on the polysemic words with figurative meaning in the Modern Chinese Dictionary sixth edition,which are described from lexicology aspect firstly,then are analyzed statistically about the original class and metaphoric class.Besides,these words are also calculated out the mapping relation in the derived class.In this way,this thesis will conclude the semantic distance,statistic the using of original meaning and metaphor meaning,explore the frequency of its application.In chapter one,this paper introduces the object of study,clears up the research status and state briefly about the reaching methods,innovation point and purpose of research.In chapter two,this paper mainly introduces the length and basic information of word class of the polysemic words with figurative meaning.Through the contrasting of specific data,this paper will figure out the quantitative superiority of syllable and trisyllabic words.And the fact that polysemic words with figurative meaning are mainly taken over by noun and verb,instead of objective and compatible words will be showed,too.In chapter three,this paper mainly introduces the distribution of classification of original class and figurative class in terms of meaning.In the former,the rank is form concrete,abstraction,biological activity,social activity,movement and change,biology,nature and status,and to auxiliary words.While in the latter,the order is concrete,social activity,biology,biological activity,nature and status,space time and auxiliary.In chapter four,the article researches the mapping relationship in the derivation of figurative.According to the statics,the conclusion of two relationships in words derivation: one-way mapping and bi-directional mapping will be proved.The one-way mapping is very obvious from concrete to abstract class,and two-way mapping is mainly reflected in social activity and biological activity class,also in abstract and biology class.In chapter five,through searching the practical usage of these words from letter A-J,the using frequency of original meaning and figurative meaning will be calculated.Thus,this article will classify the figurative meaning words into strong form and weak form.On the basis of studying about the two types in separating sections and words meaning classification and contrasting the usage of figurative meaning,the research will find out that there is a great gap between the using frequency(which has the great distance of 0% and 100%),but there is a quite narrow gap between different sections.Although there are some shortcomings in the language database which this paper is depending on,by contrasting the usage of CCL,the results of the research in this paper are also reliable.
