| Rickshaws became a kind of popular transportation tool when they were firstly introduced into Beijing.Rickshaw pullers' work and lives started and ended along with the ups and downs of the times.However,their work environment was very poor,occupational diseases occurred frequently.Furthermore,for lacking of sufficient ability to pay for a long time,their marriages and daily lives were limited severely.The heavy living burdens made Rickshaw pullers take efforts to find some ways of relieving,but the ability to pay only allowed them to take recreation or pastime in a limited range.With the development of the new vehicle,a group of passengers were attracted by the new vehicle,which causing much harder lives to rickshaw pullers.In order to change this unfortunate life,rickshaw pullers made serials of struggles.However,the result was insignificant because of self-limited and weak strength.Meanwhile,rickshaw pullers experienced themselves and got greater development in thoughts,which drawing the attention of Beijing Communist Party.With the help of the Communist Party,rickshaw pullers who gradually broke away from the passive fate and shouldered the responsibility and mission which the times and the society endowed became the master of the country after the establishment of the country.Due to running in the streets and lanes for a long time,rickshaw pullers in Beijing did not only have the bad habits of low society,but also did have the tough and perseverance qualification.They had dual influences on the urbanization of Beijing,leaving an indelible shadow in the history of urbanization.There are two aims in the research of rickshaw pullers in the nineteen twenties and thirties: one is to make sure that rickshaw pullers provide the convenience for citizens' work and going out;the other is to return to their real lives and the original condition of social interaction objectively and fairly,expecting to improve the social awareness of Beijing at that time. |
