Comparison Of The "Locality" In Rickshaw Boy And Jude The Obscure

In Rickshaw Boy and Jude the Obscure,China’s locality and Britain’s locality not only reflect some common characteristics,but also many differences.The two works vernacular nature in different cultural background presents differently in their protagonists Xiangzi and Jude.Laoshe and Hardy put "locality" as a kind of feelings and emotional sustenance on their respective protagonists.In the process of social change and rapid urbanization,under the condition of the split of tradition and modernity,the ordinary "exiles" in different cultural backgrounds are all local,but they are also by modernization.The first chapter mainly discusses the locality in different cultural backgrounds of China and Britain,and analyzes the different structures and characteristics of the locality society in China and Britain.The second chapter mainly analyzes the local fetters of Xiangzi and Jude as a "stranger".For Xiangzi,the local character rooted in the blood is the "local home" that he can’t go back to,while for Jude,it is the "local shackles" that he can’t get rid of all his life.The third chapter mainly discusses the different life paths of Xiangzi and Jude,and the cultural factors behind them.Xiangzi followed a pattern of "circular structure",while Jude followed a pattern of "linear structure".Xiangzi and Jude’s life paths are closely related to their different cultural backgrounds.The fourth chapter discusses the different states of China and Britain torn down by tradition and modernity.This part discusses from three aspects: first,the threat of urban change to thetraditional local social structure and culture;second,the "exiles" torn down by various forces in the process of urbanization;and finally,the question is raised: how do people make their home under the rapid change of social culture? In the above part of the discussion,we can know more clearly: under different cultural background,the Chinese and British people’s local characteristics are not only common,but also have different characteristics,and this different local characteristics have different effects on people in the process of urbanization.
