| Chinese piety culture,as an important content in Chinese traditional culture,is playing an irreplaceable role in teaching Chinese as a second language(TCSL).Therefore,it is of great significance to study the current situation of transmission of Chinese piety culture in Thailand and to analyze the problems and teaching strategies of the volunteer Chinese teachers in their classroom teaching.This study investigated 174 volunteer Chinese teachers in Thailand about their present situation of Chinese piety culture teaching,their problems in teaching the culture and their corresponding coping strategies.Reasons why Chinese piety culture teaching was not conducted among some participants were further analyzed.Suggestions were proposed to solve the problems that volunteer teachers faced when teaching Chinese piety culture in Thailand.Specifically,the present research showed that the volunteer Chinese teachers' teaching language,their students' Chinese language proficiency,and the teaching materials they used were at various levels.Chinese piety culture was not sufficiently included in their classroom teaching.The proportion of volunteers teaching Chinese piety culture did not reach one fifth of the total number.Reasons why volunteers have not carried out Chinese piety culture mainly include: students' low Chinese language proficiency,volunteers' limited Thai language competence,and few teaching materials related with Chinese piety culture.The research also found that the volunteers who included Chinese piety culture in their teaching often conducted their instruction in the areas of festivals,customs,songs,films and TV works.To tackle the difficulties that they met when teaching Chinese piety culture,teachers reported some strategies,including learning Thai language,identifying appropriate traits of Chinese piety culture to teach,adapting Chinese piety culture materials according to students' Chinese language competency and being aware of the Thai piety culture. |
