The theory of creative treason is put forward by French literary socialist Robert Escarpit, which holds that "translation is a kind of creative treason".Professor Xie Tianzhen further develops this idea and publishes research papers to explain it in a systematic way.Different from the traditional study of translation, the theory of creative treason neither focuses on verbal expression of certain language forms nor judges the quality of translation.Instead,it regards the product of translation behavior as an accomplished fact and accepts it,on the basis of which series of observations and analysis are made on the cultural communication and dissemination behind the translation. This theory broadens the research field of translation study and provides us with a new perspective for studying poetry translation.Ci-poerty is one of the most important poetic genres in classical Chinese literature and reaches its peak during the Song Dynasty. It is regarded as the most typical literary form in the Song Dynasty.Together with Tang poetry, they are known as "Tang Poetry and Song Ci".Su Shi was one of the most outstanding representatives of literature in the Northern Song Dynasty. He touched upon not only poems and prose but also calligraphy and painting. He discarded the graceful and restrained style of poetry which was popular in the late Tang Dynasty and started to write poems in a forthright way.His style of Ci-poetry has a tremendous impact on the later generations. For more than a century, translators both at home and abroad have been committed to translating his Ci-poems,and different translation versions come out one after another. This thesis analyzes the most influential translations of Su Shi’s Ci-poems by different translators with the angle of "Translation is a kind of creative treason",discusses elements of creative treason in different renditions from the dimensions of images, sound, tune names and titles, grammatical person and antithesis. In addition, the paper briefly analyzes translation strategies translators have adopted in translating poetry and summarizes the major factors contributing to creative treason. This paper discovers the value of creative treason in translation and in the meantime hopes to provide reference for further study on the dissemination of classical Chinese poetry abroad.
