Song Ci,one of the great treasures in Chinese literature, has gained great fame and been widespread in China and many other English-speaking countries.Su Shi,also known as Su Dong-po,is one of the most renowned poets and statesmen in Song Dynasty and famous for his bold and unconstrained ci-poems as well as many works in essay, calligraphy, and painting. As the founder of bold and unconstrained school,he has composed copious famous ci-poems and lines in Chinese literature, which are well cherished. In order to let more people know Song Ci and share the beauty of ci-poems by Su Shi,many translators and scholars have concentrated on translating Song Ci as well as Su Shi’s ci-poems,and numerous translations have been published both in English as well as other languages like French. Some translation activities have been organized by Chinese government to introduce and translate Chinses classic literature and to make a stance for Chinese literature in the world literature. With a comparison between active translation activities of Su Shi’s ci-poems,the study and research on translations of his ci-poems are relatively rare.In China, there are no books on Su Shi’s ci-poem translation, but few studies on this are contained in the study of Chinese classic literature, the prose and poetry of China, and the translation forms like free verse or essay,etc.Well-qualified research papers are few.In last ten years, some have been conducted under the guidance of the theoretical framework Manipulation of Andre Lefevere, some under the guidance of Creative Treason of Xie Tianzhen, which focus on the general features in translation of Su Shi’s ci-poems,no specific study of the image translations of Su Shi’s ci-poems.In the west, the studies of the translation of Su Shi’s ci-poems are few, most of which are the comments scattered in the academic journals, few on the image translations. This thesis aims at systematically analyzing the image translations in Su Shi’s ci-poems,in order to give a glimpse of the problems and difficulties that may arise in the cultural exchanges during the translation process.Creative treason,a term first put forward by the French literary sociologist Robert Escarpit who deemed that "translation is always a creative treason",further developed by Chinese translation scholar Xie Tianzhen,a translation professor at Shanghai International Studies University, and illustrated as a key research question in his book Medio-Translatology.According to Xie Tianzhen,he acclaimed that Medio-translatology mainly focuses the study of "the loss, distortion and extension of the information of source language in translation process, and moreover the unique value and significance of translation(mainly in literature translation)as an activity In cross-cultural exchanges, rather than the transformation from the source language to the target language"(谢天振,1999:1).However,creative treason, the key question of Medio-translatology with special value to study for translation in literary works, can clearly expose the congestion, collision, misinterpretation and distortion between the cultural exchanges.Under the guidance of the creative treason, this thesis will be conducted to discuss the significance of image translation in Su Shi’s ci-poems to the cultural exchanges.
