A Report On The English To Chinese Translation Of Negroland:a Memoir (Chapter 1-8)

This thesis is an English to Chinese translation report.The translation task is based on the book,Negroland:A Memoir,which was published in the United States by Pantheon Books on Sep.8 th,2015.As soon as it was published,it became a best seller and was noted as one of the 10 best books of 2015 by Washington Post and New York Times.The author,Margo Jefferson,is a book reviewer of Times and won the Pulitzer for Criticism in 2015.This report chooses the first eight chapters of the book as the translation original material,it's a memoir about the author who grew up in an upper-middle-class African American family in Chicago.She belongs to The Third Race which distancing themselves from whites and the lower class of blacks.Through the memoir of the author's upbringing and education among the colored elite,we can realize the interior monologue and feeling of the upper-class of African American.Also it tells the African American history and the process of the civil rights movement.What's more,it introduces the history of upper-class of African American,and their dedication to the civil rights movement.As the original material of the translation report is of a special literary genre,which is not very easy to translate.The translation was finished with reference to a lot of parallel texts and Functional Equivalence Theory.This report is composed of five parts:Part One is a brief introduction to the translation project's background,significance and its author.Part Two is about the translation process,including pre-translation work,the analysis of the source text,translation process,post-translation issues.Part Three is the introduction to Functional Equivalence Theory.Part Four is the analysis of translation samples,including complex word-combination,English Rhetoric,Black English and culture knowledge.Guided by the Functional Equivalence Theory,many translation methods are used,such as:transliteration and free translation,domestication and foreignization.And the fifth part is the summary of translation practice.
