Time interval have two presenting forms:full interval and empty interval. There is no stimulation in the empty interval, but only the beginning and end of time are marked by makers, researchers proposed markers will affect the perception of empty interval, and empty interval studies show that the characteristics of markers affect the perception of empty interval, such as the length of empty interval, processing channel and the size of markers. This study is based on ATOM as the theoretical background to explore whether the associations between makers will affect the empty interval perception. In this study, the effect of markers relationship on empty interval perception is explored by a time bisection task under the traditional AB paradigm. In the first experiment, the influence of the magnitude difference between two markers was investigated. The experiment is divided into two kinds of stimulus conditions, which are magnitude difference large and small.Subjects were required to judge whether the empty interval was closer to previous standard short or long duration. Results show that the Point of Subjective Equality(PSE)in magnitude difference large condition was lower than those occurring in magnitude difference small condition, and there are no difference of the Just Noticeable Difference(JND)between magnitude difference large condition and magnitude difference small condition.empty intervals were perceived to be longer in magnitude difference large condition than those occurring in magnitude difference small condition. In general, the first experiment show that the magnitude difference between two markers can affect the perception of empty interval. Then in Experiment 2,this study explored the influence of magnitude direction on the empty interval perception. The experiment is divided into two kinds of stimulus conditions:ascending and descending, and subjects were required to judge whether the empty interval was closer to previous standard short or long duration. The results show that PSE under the condition of the ascending was significantly lower than under the condition of the descending, and there are no difference of JND between ascending and descending condition.Experiment2 shown that empty intervals were perceived to be longer in ascending condition than those occurring in descending condition. In short,The first two experiments tell us the magnitude difference and the magnitude direction will interfere with the perception of empty intervals. In Experiment 1 and 2,the two conditions of magnitude difference and the magnitude direction was existed alone. In Experiment 3,we explored the effect of magnitude difference and magnitude direction on temporal cognition in one experiment. It was found that the effect of magnitude direction on empty interval perception was disappeared, but the effect of magnitude difference on empty interval perception.Through three studies,we deserve the results as follows:(1)Associations between makers influence the perception of an empty interval. In the AB paradigm, the greater the magnitude difference, the longer the time perception is.It is proved ATOM theory again that indicates the quantity and time are in a common magnitude system. When the quantity information is processed, the cross-dimensional interference effects will occur.(2)The magnitude direction also affects the perception of an empty interval, and the time perception is longer in ascending order.(3)when the two condition of magnitude difference and magnitude direction occurred in one experiment, the effect of magnitude direction on empty interval perception vanishes, and only the influence of magnitude difference.Attention play an important role in this process.
