As a form of literature,drama,except a few closet dramas,distinguishes itself from poetry,prose and novel,since it is only in the performance that the full potential of dramatic text is realized.Dialogues,as the main component of a drama,plays an essential role in plot development and theme unveiling.Therefore,great attention should be given to the appeal and effect recreation of dialogues in drama translation.Taking The History Boys by Alan Bennett as an example,this report explores pragmatic strategies and methods for drama translation from the perspectives of language and culture on the basis of “Performability”.In regards to language,the translation of dramatic dialogues is analyzed in terms of colloquialism,actability and individuality,and the translation of foreign or unfamiliar cultural elements is also discussed.In accordance with the case study,this report concludes that the translation of dramatic text should be both performable and appealing to target audience as a stage art.
