In recent years, the fast-growing sci-tech industry in China has been driving the need for translation of scientific text, including scientific papers.Scientific research and innovation contribute significantly to the development of productivity. To keep in pace with the latest trend in global science and technology,Chinese scientists and researchers have been learning the most advanced knowledge and recent developments by reading scientific papers published on leading international journals.Similar to general academic papers, scientific papers contain a large volume of specialized scientific and technological knowledge, precise language and objective expressions. In addition, scientific papers have some unique characteristics, including the special writing structure and strict logic. However,it is very difficult in China nowadays to find professional translators who not only master translation skills, but also know the writing style of scientific papers and understand specialized knowledge in science and technology.Based on a case study of the translation of two scientific papers from English to Chinese, this thesis analyzes problems resulting from translator’s lack of specialized knowledge, including mishandling of terms, improper logic and unmatched style of writing.Three strategies are proposed to address these problems, namely taking parallel text as reference, taking the mode of “Machine Translation + Post-editing” and learning the writing norm of scientific papers. It is hoped that this thesis will provide a useful reference for translators who will be involved in translation of such scientific papers.
