Discourse Strategies Of Obama's Speeches Involving The Other Countries-Based On Critical Discourse Analysis

Language is the product of the society as well as a mirror of the society.On the surface,CDA reveals the speaker's ideology hidden in the discourse.Using CDA to analyze discourse can explore the relationship between language,power and ideology.This thesis attempts to analyze the Obama's speeches,especially those involving other countries.The aim of this thesis is revealing how discourse strategies are used to express the speaker's viewpoint and attitude and spread his ideology.Furthermore,it can show readers how Barack Obama uses language to establish a superpower image on the basis of the national interests.Besides this thesis can show the reader why the USA will have different attitudes on different countries.This thesis tries to employ Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar(shortened as SFG)to analyze the selected speeches.Halliday believes that language has three functions:ideational,interpersonal and textual functions.Based on these three functions,the author will analyze the selected speeches from the perspectives of transitivity,vocabulary,mood,modality,personal pronouns and text.The author obtains the following conclusions via this research.First,in order to state facts objectively,shorten the distance between the speaker and the audience,arouse resonance in the audience and gain more support,Obama skillfully uses discourse strategies in order to achieve political motives through the three functions.Second,when the contacts between nations are becoming more and more frequent,the international relations have become a hot and sensitive topic.The author tries to analyze the cdiscourse strategies of Obama's speeches involving the other countries with critical discourse analysis.Based on safeguarding of national interests and protecting America's own image,Obama appropriately states national relations with skillful discourse strategies so as to win more allies and achieve the political goals.Third,ideology is hidden in the discourse,so does the state of authority.The language serves for the speaker.When the language is used to spread the speaker's ideology,it gives play to its convincing and tempting functions to influence the audience's the ability to think and judge.Therefore,CDA can cultivate and enhance the audience's the ability of thinking critically.
