Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights is considered one of the greatest English novels or "50 books to read before you die".For more than one century, the novel has aroused great interest among critics because of its peculiar artistic style. The thesis attempts to analyze different "gaps" in binary opposition presented in the novel from the perspective of deconstruction,so as to offer a different interpretation of the novel in terms of plot, character, setting as well as narrators."Gap" is one of the key ideas in deconstruction, which is referred as the inevitable voids in any narrative that reader is called upon to fill from his or her experience or imagination. And binary opposition is considered as one of the basic structure of diverse kinds of language, culture and even philosophy.According to Jacques Derrida, any binary opposition is subject to deconstruction.Focusing on plot, character, setting and narrators, the thesis analyzes various types of gaps in binary opposition, and attempts to offer a different interpretation of the novel. The thesis also intends to examine the reasons why Emily Bronte uses such complicated narrative strategies and why she leaves so many gaps in the fictional world of the novel. The thesis consists of four parts. The first part introduces Emily Bronte, her novel Wuthering Heights, and the concept of gap and binary opposition. The second part discusses deconstruction as critical theory, and focuses on the analysis of the theoretical method to deconstruct the text-gaps and binary oppositions. The third part examines the diverse gaps in plot, character, setting and narrators, and puts forward the unreasonable points which are opposed to traditional ideas, and analyzes the logical validity concerned. The fourth part concludes the thesis, and suggests topics for further study.
