The thesis presents a comparative analysis of the English legal terms and their corresponding Chinese translation based on the prototype-model theory. The aim is to identify some useful techniques for translating legal terms according to the prototype-model theory.By comparing and analyzing the most representative E-C translation of legal terms in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,it attempts to conclude some translation strategies to help translation practice.Afterwards, according to the above strategies, the thesis has found out some inappropriate translation in the Chinese version of the Convention. The thesis has explored the problems of legal terms translation, especially their reasons and solutions. It starts with a brief introduction to the current studies of translation of legal terms and the theoretical framework, which is prototype-model theory. Then through examining and comparing different features of English and translated Chinese legal terms,it proves the adaptability of the prototype-model theory. After comparison,it puts forward some instructive translating methods, which contribute new perspective to the current studies in this area. Finally,on the basis of the findings, the thesis tentatively concludes some translation strategies: using synonyms, using same sentence patterns and the change of phrase structure;deleting and complementing, changing cohesion markers and transposition;using modal verbs, using idiomatic legal phrases, and using formal legal style. These strategies can be used to solve future legal translation problems. Thus the study is of great importance to legal translation, and it aims to promote more relevant excellent studies.
