Printmaking in China has had a very stable period of development. However, with the progress of the times, especially in today's era of cultural sharing, where is its future development going and how to retain its rich and unique connotation of local spirit is the facing challenge of the current printmaking."Freehandness" refers to a kind of freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese culture and art,and printmaking itself has its own meaning of freehandness. But so far, very few people have proposed and studied the freehand brushwork. Therefore,it is of special significance to analyze the ontology language and its spiritual connotation of printmaking,to combine modern art concept with Chinese traditional freehand spirit and to construct the freehand thought in engraving. This paper analyzes in detail the phenomenon, specific characteristics and expression of traditional Chinese freehand spirit in printmaking, its influence on printmaking language and its significance, and puts forward the concept of "freehand brushwork".From the perspective of ontology language of printmaking, the author attempts to elaborate the expression of "Yi" in printmaking from two aspects of "imagery" and "artistic conception",combining with the examples of predecessors' creation. It also makes a new exploration of the organic combination of traditional Chinese freehand woodcut and woodblock print with my own creative practice. These innovations, combined with the predecessors' artistic practice, revealed the significance of "freehand" in engraving. On this basis,we could figure out the development trend of today's freehand prints, develop the spirit of self-awareness and look for creative works with contemporary spirit and national characteristics.
