On The Chinese Translation Of English Academic Articles From The Perspective Of Interpersonal Register:

Based on the register theory put forward by M.A.K.Halliday,this thesis proceeds from the perspective of interpersonal register and analyzes selected examples from the translation of "The Sea in Pericles",an academic article,aiming at exploring how the interpersonal perspective of the register theory helps to instruct the translation of academic articles and studies in this field.According to the text typology theory proposed by Katharina Reiss,there are three types of texts:informative text,expressive text and operative text.An informative text presents fact,providing information while expressing one's opinions."The Sea in Pericles" is a typical paper of the school of New Historicism.It is an informative text,which not only provides readers with a great deal of information and knowledge,but also puts forwards lots of assumptions based on the cultural,historical and geographical backgrounds and expresses a diversity of emotions throughout the analysis.While assumptions may bring challenges to target readers who may be unfamiliar with the cultural background of Pericles,the author's emotions between the lines could likely be ignored or mistaken.Therefore,apart from objective information,assumptions and emotions presented in a subjective way should be dealt with properly as well.According to the register theory,field,tenor and mode are the three variables of a register that determine the ideational,interpersonal and textual functions respectively.The assumptions and emotions in "The Sea in Pericles" are connected to the interpersonal functions of the text,which include three aspects:mode,modality and evaluation.The thesis will illustrate with examples how the interpersonal perspective helps to guide the translation.It is expected that this research can be of value to the future studies and the practice of translating English academic articles into Chinese.
