In recent years, our country encourages colleges and universities to advance EE,and students need a series of textbooks that are suitable for class-training of EE,but at present this system has not been perfectly developed. So,this thesis is of practical significance. At the initial stage the Chinese EE textbooks are mainly translated from foreign academic monographs, which may raise many problems in the process of translation–––the target texts are obscure, students get confused and the teacher fails to achieve an expected teaching aim, etc. This gap demands the translator grasp the scientific linguistic theories and combine them with translation practice, thus he/she can get an appropriate translation that is easy for students to understand. This thesis is also of certain significance for the theory development of SFL.Translation,as one subarea that can verify the appliability of SFL,has not been much employed to EE register–––one type of academic genre. Thus, researching EE will not only testify its appliability on a more delicate position but also put forward new demands for the theoretical framework of SFL.This thesis summarizes former researches of genre analyses, register theory, translation studies and their application to EE texts based on the functional context theory of Halliday.Taking Handbook of Research in Entrepreneurship Education,Vol.3 as an example, the author aims at answering two research questions: Are the ST and TT of Handbook equivalent based on Hallidayan register theory? In the E-C translation,in what way should the translator reconstruct the context of EE texts to achieve their functional equivalence?SFL regards language as a multi-stratal system,in which the lexicogrammar system realizes the semantics system and the semantics system realizes the context stratum outside language(the cline with context of situation and context of culture as two poles).Seen from another direction, the lexicogrammar stratum construes semantics stratum and the semantics stratum construes the context stratum.SFL's difference from structural linguistics lies in that it considers language as the resource for expressing meaning,i.e.a system network that is composed of systemic options. What the language user chooses from the network is not by chance but in accordance with the contextual parameters. In this sense,we can know what the author has chosen from the language system, what has not been chosen to infer the intention of the author and how to reconstruct the context by the choices in the lexicogrammar stratum. So,the author of this thesis gives priority to the perspective “from above”,i.e.considering the context of the ST and the context that the translator should reconstruct. To meet this end,the author of this thesis analyzes the transitivity system,Mood system and Theme system and strives to reveal register rationale that lies behind the choices that the translator should make. This thesis has found that the ST and TT of Handbook are equivalent in ideational meaning but inequivalent in interpersonal meaning and textual meaning.Based on the theoretical framework of Hallidayan register theory, the translator should change the choices in the Mood system and coordinate the intersubjectivity to reconstruct the Tenor and unpack the grammatical metaphor, coordinate the intertextuality and change the choices in Theme system to reconstruct the Mode to achieve the functional equivalence between ST and TT.The investigation also shows that in EE register the ideational meaning in the ST is inclined to be transferred into interpersonal meaning in the TT with the change of contextual parameters.
