A Study On Iconicity In The English Translation Of Can Xue's Short Story Dialogues In Paradise

Can Xue is one of the contemporary China's women writers,her writings,a total of nine novels written from 1989 to the present,have been translated and disseminated all over the world.Those works have gained recognition in the English literary world and are also favored by foreign literary awards.Based on the successful translation and introduction to Can Xue's novels,this thesis will return to the source text and the target text,in particular,the English version Dialogues in Paradise is selected as the research object;the thesis takes further exploration in Can Xue's “Pure Literature” world and the translator's “decoding” and “coding” Process,as well as discriminates the characteristic of the translation with the iconicity theory.This thesis chooses Can Xue's most experimental short story collection and Ronald R.Janssen and Zhang Jian's translation of Dialogues in Paradise as the research object;the case covers two aspects: syntactic iconicity and textual iconicity.The thesis pays more attention to the objective assessment of the expression effect and attempts to analyze the translator's potential iconicity consciousness during the translation process.It is found from that the target text has individual embodying of iconicity translation under the principle of “faithfulness and fluency”,but it does not fully emphasize the stylistic sensitivity of iconicit;Meanwhile there is a phenomenon that the translation styles and techniques are not completely unified in several translated stories,which results in the obvious mark in jointly-finished target text.Concerning this issue,the thesis analyzes and classifies the iconicity of the language in the source text and the target text,especially discussing the iconicity features in the English version from the syntactic and textual dimension.At last,the thesis proposes that the translation of Can Xue's works needs to be based on literary view of Can Xue and to be required to understand the aesthetic features and stylistic forms of her short stories.The related translation theories are supposed to be applied in the processing of translation,which also unifies translation styles and techniques so as to scientifically translate the iconicity features in the source text and make the English version have the same aesthetic effects and aesthetic values as the source text.
