In late 1950 s,Nikolai Kapustin was an excellent jazz pianist,composer and arranger.His piano music is a sophisticated synthesis of classical traditions and jazz styles,that is a unique and new genre.He jazz the body of the composition of the work,such as the phrase and so on,into the traditional classical musical structure.which is neither stylized in serious music,nor free in the form of pure jazz.He has absorbed jazz styles into standard classical form and his approach to jazz idioms is authentic and original compared to other classical composers such as Ravel,Debussy,Stravinsky,and Ligeti,who also wrote jazz-inspired pieces.Kapustin adopted the virtuosic playing of Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum,the unique style of Erroll Garner,and the rich texture and harmony of his experience with big bands.Not only that,but also by the romantic period of music and the influence of Russian composers,the use of classical music forms and techniques in accordance with the traditional,created a lot of unique music works.He was keen to create instrumental concertos in the early stage,and most of his later works were piano works.His piano solo repertoire is quite extensive and he has completed more than 70 compositions for the piano alone.Among his piano solo works are 20 sonatas,suites,a toccatina,etudes,variations,preludes,a sonatina,inventions,an impromptu,and many more.His music works cover a wide range of genres.The Twenty-Four Preludes and Eight Concert Etudes is Kapustin’s most satisfying works and an ambitious genre to exhibit his extraordinary grasp of both jazz and classical music.This study explores the effects of jazz and classical music on Kapustin,also studied how he created his own style of music,combining classical music with jazz.The study is composed of three parts: the brief introduction and educational background of Kapustin,the music style and creative characteristics of Kapustin,and the analysis of Twenty-Four Preludes Op.53 and Eight Concert Etudes Op.40 No.6 in Kapustin’s works. |
