Thomas Pynchon,as one of the most excellent writers,is known for obscurity in his postmodern fiction.By far,he has composed six novels, including The Crying of Lot 49 and V,all having been published, with each one drawing much attention from the public.Thomas Pynchon's great contribution to literature has won him many honors, such as the William Faulkner Foundation Award in 1963,the U.S.National Book Award for Fiction in 1974,and the Howells Medal in 1975.The Crying of Lot 49 and V not only illustrate the story of many postmodern men who are strictly stratified into different classes, but also reveal an uncertain and meaningless postmodern society which gradually turns into decadence and entropy and finally ends with “Heat Death”.As Pynchon fuses scientific knowledge into his works, here this thesis also intends to employ scientific discourses to analyze the entropic society in Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 and V and attempts to put forward remedies to rescue the society from the increasing entropy. This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part explores Pynchon's scarce life experiences and gives introduction to The Crying of Lot 49 and V,and the main content of the whole thesis. The second part makes use of Newton's law of universal gravitation to analyze the reason leading to the entropic fate confronted by the post-modern America or even the whole world and the social structure under the“gravitation”.The third part introduces the theory of entropy and “Heat Death” to describe the social situation at that time. The fourth part employs Erwin Schrodinger's Cat to explain that it is possible for the whole society to avoid the entropic fate. From the above analysis, the fifth part concludes that the postmodern America could be rescued from the increasing entropy if people could pay more attention to their spiritual health rather than material wealth.
