An Analysis Of "VP + Bu Neng Tai + Proper Noun" Construction Based On DCT Model

As a popular construction on the Internet(e.g.zuo shi bu neng tai li yue),�VP +bu neng tai + Proper noun� has been widely accepted and used by people.The construction has special structure,rich connotative meanings and novel pragmatic effects.Up to now,many scholars have studied �Degree Adverb + Noun�construction from grammatical,semantic,pragmatic and cognitive perspective.However,�VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun� construction is quite different from�Degree Adverb + Noun� construction.The former has its own special features on both syntactic and semantic level.Under the framework of cognitive linguistics,this thesis combines construction coercion with lexical coercion together and tentatively integrates them into DCT(Double Coercion on Two Levels),which is applied to make a comprehensive explanation for the cognitive mechanism of �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun�construction.Through collecting data from the Internet engines like Baidu,Weibo,BCC,there are 196 items in total to form a closed corpus in this thesis.Whereafter,we have made a qualitative and quantitative analysis about these items in order to achieve a comprehensive study about �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun�construction.The study results mainly include the following:Firstly,this thesis tentatively puts forward DCT by combining construction coercion and lexical coercion.Under the function of double coercion,we have discussed the cognitive mechanism of �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun�construction from both syntactic level and semantic level.Secondly,there exist motivations for the occurrence of �VP + bu neng tai +Proper noun� construction.On the syntactic level,the proper noun is coerced by the whole construction and the Chinese adverb �tai�,by which the referential function is transferred into descriptive function.On the semantic level,under the function of double coercion,any proper noun that can enter �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun�construction is often characterized by its negative characteristics,which makes the connotative meaning of the whole construction appears to be negative.Thirdly,based on the closed corpus,the study of �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun� construction is not only involved in syntagmatic level,but also in paradigmatic level.Both verb phrase and proper noun in �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun� construction are viewed as variables.They are respectively classified into different categories according to different standards.And the thesis has made detailed analysis and discussion about each category.Finally,the author has analyzed the features of �VP + bu neng tai + Proper noun� construction from three dimensions: syntactic,semantic and pragmatic dimension,aiming to deepen the understanding of the construction.
