C-E Translation Of Run-on Sentences In Soft News Of "How The 'Sea Bull' Be Awesome"

"How the 'Sea Bull' Be Awesome" series,which are the material of translation,come from two journalists who work for the Xiangtan Daily News,and tell the stories about Professor Wan Buyan from Hunan University of Science and Technology and his latest generation of the Seafloor Multi-coring Drill.The major feature of soft news is highly use of run-on sentences which refer to a few syntagms followed one after another just like flowing water,its form seems loose,but the content is closely linked and the meaning is compact.Therefore,according to characteristics of a large number of run-on sentences in translation practice materials,this study explores the translation skills and methods of translation materials from the perspective of discourse analysis.Based on the theory of cohesion in discourse analysis,this thesis explores translation of run-on sentences in soft news.Halliday and Hasan define cohesion as "the relations of meaning that exist within the text,and that define it as a text".Moreover,the device of cohesion is divided into two major parts,grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.Grammatical cohesion includes reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction,and lexical cohesion contains reiteration,synonym/antonym,hyponymy/meronymy and collocation.Firstly,this study is based on the definition and classification of run-on sentences by predecessors such as Lü Shuxiang,Hu Mingyang and Wang Wenbin and so forth to study run-on sentences,thus run-on sentences have been classified in three major classes: run-on sentences with single-subject,run-on sentences with multi-subjects and run-ons sentence with complex subjects,etc.Then,according to Halliday's cohesion concept and cohesive devices,such as ellipses,substitution and conjunction,and translator could use some translation ski lls such as supplement,consolidation and disconnection to do translation,make translated sentences more suitable for English expression.This thesis may provide a reference and enlightenment for the later translation of soft news.Similarly,it is a basic skill that translator needs to proficiently apply the theory of cohesion and proper translation skills in C-E translation,which especially plays a key role in news translation.
